I’m Jason Carr, and I’m a tax attorney. I built MuseSpring because the tax profession needs new practitioners, and the people entering it deserve better training than what’s out there. I’ve built a multi-state tax law practice from the ground up, grew it to a team of 15+ professionals, and spent years representing clients before the IRS, U.S. Tax Court, and state tax agencies in Texas, New York, and Oklahoma. I’ve handled over a thousand tax resolution cases, advised hundreds of small business owners on tax credits, entity selection and tax planning, and helped clients navigate everything from unfiled returns to seven-figure IRS disputes. Between our resolution and tax planning work, we save our clients millions of dollars collectively every year.

Before starting my firm, I clerked at the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, where I saw firsthand how the federal government approaches tax enforcement.

That experience shapes how I train practitioners: you learn the rules, you learn why they exist, and you learn what happens when they’re broken.

I hold an LL.M. in Securities and Financial Regulation from Georgetown University Law Center, a J.D. from Texas A&M University School of Law, and a B.A. from the University of Texas Permian Basin. I’m licensed in Texas, New York, and Oklahoma, and admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court and the IRS.

My Path Into Tax

I didn’t start in tax with a law degree. In 1995, I left the United States Navy with a high school diploma, no college degree, no connections, and no savings. I wanted to own my own business, but I had limited resources and no clear path.

I found a correspondence course for tax preparation. I learned how to prepare returns by hand, and for my first tax season, I negotiated the use of an empty retail space, set up a desk and a typewriter, and prepared about 50 returns. Many of them in pencil first, then typed. I couldn’t afford a computer.

A lot of those first-season clients stayed with me for over 20 years. That experience taught me something I’ve carried through every stage of my career: if you take care of people and do good work, they don’t leave.

I continued preparing returns for individuals and businesses for the next two decades. When I eventually went to law school, I knew I wanted to be a tax attorney with my own practice. The day I was sworn into the bar, I launched my firm. Today, we prepare hundreds of returns every year and resolve tax disputes at the IRS and state level for clients around the country.

I built MuseSpring because that correspondence course changed the direction of my life over 30 years ago. I want to do the same thing for you, with better training, better tools, and support that course never offered.

Why I Started MuseSpring

Over 300,000 accountants have left the profession since 2020. Three out of four CPAs are approaching retirement. Seven out of ten tax firms say they can’t find qualified people to hire. The demand for tax professionals is growing. The supply is shrinking.

At the same time, most training programs for new tax preparers either teach you to fill out forms for someone else’s franchise or hand you a textbook and wish you luck. Nobody was teaching people how to actually build an independent tax practice, with the legal framework, the business formation, the marketing, the AI tools, and the ongoing support to make it work.

I built MuseSpring to fill that gap. The Tax Business Blueprint program is attorney-led training that takes you from zero experience to a functioning tax preparation practice. You learn the tax law behind the forms, not just which boxes to fill in. You build your business entity, set up your operations, and develop a client acquisition strategy before your first tax season. And you join a community of practitioners with direct access to coaching, advanced training, and a referral network that grows with your career.

I wrote the book on it, literally. The Tax Business Blueprint: How to Start, Build, and Grow a Successful Tax Preparation Practice covers the full roadmap.

Who This Is For

MuseSpring is for career changers, second-career seekers, and anyone looking for a low-cost path to business ownership in a profession with real demand. You don’t need an accounting background. You don’t need a college degree. You don’t need $50,000 for a franchise. You need the willingness to learn a technical skill, the discipline to build a practice, and the right training to do both.

That’s what we provide.
