FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I do this at home?

Yes. The majority of independent tax preparers operate from a home office. The program covers everything you need to set up a professional, compliant home-based practice.

How long does the program take to complete?

The core training is self-paced and designed to be completed in 8 to 12 weeks, depending on how much time you can dedicate. Many students complete it while working a full-time job.

What credentials will I have after completing the program?

You will have your PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number), which is what the IRS requires to prepare federal returns for compensation. The program also prepares you to apply for your EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) and walks you through state-specific requirements. If you want to pursue the Enrolled Agent designation (which allows you to represent clients before the IRS), the program gives you a strong foundation for that exam.

What makes this different from other tax training courses?

Those programs train you to work for them. MuseSpring trains you to work for yourself. The curriculum is taught by a licensed tax attorney with a national, multi-state tax practice, covers compliance topics many courses skip, includes business-startup guidance, and provides ongoing coaching and community. You leave with your own business, not someone else’s job offer.

What if I need help after I complete the training?

That's what the monthly membership is for. Weekly coaching calls, access to the LMS, resources, template library, and direct access to our team for questions about client situations, compliance, and business operations. Most members stay in the community long after completing the core training.

Do I need an accounting degree or any prior experience?

No. The program is designed for people entering the profession for the first time. If you can follow a structured curriculum, you can learn tax preparation. Many successful tax preparers started as career changers with no accounting background (including our founder).
