H&R Block’s Income Tax Course costs $149 and runs about 40 hours. For what it is, it’s a solid introduction to basic return preparation. Here’s an honest assessment.
What It Covers
The course teaches the mechanics of preparing individual tax returns. Filing statuses, standard and itemized deductions, common credits, wage and income reporting. You’ll learn how to enter data into H&R Block’s proprietary software and produce a completed 1040. By the end, you’ll be able to prepare a basic individual return.
What It’s Designed to Do
The course is a recruiting pipeline. H&R Block runs it to identify potential seasonal employees. Graduates who perform well are offered positions at H&R Block offices during filing season. The training is structured around their software, their procedures, and their business model.
There’s nothing wrong with this if your goal is to work at H&R Block for a season. But that’s a very specific goal.
What It Doesn’t Cover
Business formation. The course doesn’t teach you how to form an LLC, get an EFIN, set up a business bank account, or operate independently. It’s designed to produce employees, not entrepreneurs.
Legal compliance. You won’t learn about Circular 230 obligations, preparer penalties under IRC 6694 and 6695, or the legal risks you take on every time you sign a return. These are the rules that govern your professional conduct, and H&R Block’s course skips them.
Client acquisition. No marketing, no pricing strategy, no referral network development, no Google Business Profile setup. Nothing about how to find clients on your own.
AI tools. No training on how to use AI-powered features in professional software, how to verify AI output, or how to position yourself as an AI-augmented practitioner.
Advisory services. No tax planning, no bookkeeping, no entity selection conversations. Nothing about building a year-round practice.
Ongoing support. You take the course, you work a season, and you’re on your own. No community, no coaching, no one to call when you hit a situation you’ve never seen before.
The Takeaway
H&R Block’s course is fine for learning the basics of form preparation. It is not sufficient for building an independent practice. If your goal is to work for yourself, own your clients, and build something that generates real income, you need training that covers the full picture.
