Can AI Replace Tax Preparers? What the Data Actually Shows

The short answer is no. Here’s the long answer, with numbers.

The Employment Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% employment growth for tax preparers through 2034, faster than the national average for all occupations. That growth is driven by retirement replacement needs. Over 300,000 accountants have left the profession since 2020, and 75% of CPAs are approaching retirement age. The profession is losing people faster than it’s replacing them.

Consumer Trust Is Moving the Wrong Direction for AI

As of early 2026, only 37% of tax filers said they’d trust AI over a human preparer. That number is down from 43% a year earlier. The more people learn about AI’s limitations, the less comfortable they are handing over their taxes to an algorithm. When something goes wrong with a return, people want to call a person.

What AI Actually Replaces

AI replaces data entry. It automates the mechanical process of reading a W-2, extracting the numbers, and populating the corresponding fields on a return. That’s valuable, but it was never the part of the job that clients were paying for.

Clients pay for accuracy. They pay for someone who notices that their withholding is off, that they’re missing a credit, that their side business should probably be an S-Corp, or that their “deductions” aren’t actually deductible. They pay for someone who can explain a complex result in plain terms and tell them what to do differently next year.

Where AI Falls Short

AI cannot handle ambiguity. Tax law is full of gray areas, elections, safe harbors, and situations where the correct answer depends on facts that don’t fit neatly into a data field. When the situation is novel, AI’s confidence frequently exceeds its accuracy.

AI cannot assume liability. When you sign a return as the preparer, your PTIN is on it. If the AI got something wrong and you didn’t catch it, you bear the consequences. There is no “algorithmic reliance” safe harbor.

AI cannot manage a client relationship. It cannot read the room when a client is embarrassed about their financial situation. It cannot spot that a client’s question about “a friend’s tax issue” is actually about their own unreported income. It cannot build the kind of trust that keeps someone coming back for a decade.

The Smart Position

Use AI to handle the routine work. Apply your training and judgment to everything else. The preparers who thrive will be the ones who work with AI, not the ones who either fear it or blindly rely on it.
